School- Aged Children (Ages 5-10)

Behavioral Concerns (ADD/ADHD/Autism/Learning Difficulties)
The function of our nervous system is to perceive the environment and coordinate the behavior of all other cells. When your child is faced with a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD/ASD/SPD and others on the neurodevelopmental spectrum, it is the behavior that you are looking to change and improve. Since behavior is an output from our body, the common treatment is to control this unwanted output. At their root neurologically, these behaviors are actually input and organizational challenges that then lead to the output you don’t want. There is a common link between all of these conditions – abnormal movement and alignment of the upper spine. 60% of all movement with input into the nervous system occurs in the spine, with ⅓ of that crucial information coming just from the top two spinal bones. The birth process, even when it is normal and healthy, but more so when it is intervened upon and stressful, is often the first insult to these sensitive areas. Since movement determines brain function, when the movement is distorted, so is neurological development. This is where chiropractic comes in. When the spinal bones are out of alignment, or subluxated, the fight/flight side of our nervous system gets stuck on. We cannot be in growth/healing and protection/fight-flight at the same time, so when the stress system is stuck in protection, growth and development are stalled. In the body, when this distortion disturbs the ability of the brain to communicate with the body, a child can no longer perceive their environment and the input gets jumbled. Confusing input = confusing output. Our Pediatric Chiropractors will evaluate your child’s spinal alignment and neuromotor activity to determine if there are any areas that may be leading to a dysfunctional neurosensory input. Our gentle and safe pediatric adjustment techniques work to improve the sensory input, leading to the change in behavioral output you are looking for, without the use of medications. Scoliosis Management
The bones of your spine protect the central nervous system and stack up like a ladder to form your spinal column. There are natural curves that form from front to back as we learn to crawl and walk. These curves allow our spinal cord and nerves to function at their best. What’s not natural are curves that develop from side-to-side – this is known as a scoliosis. In the majority of cases, scoliosis is diagnosed during the adolescent years, around the period of growth spurts, but before puberty. The cause of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) remains unknown and, contrary to popular belief, does not develop due to poor postural habits or abnormal stresses on the back. They do tend to run in families, however. Our Pediatric Chiropractors will assess your child’s spine for any signs of scoliosis and look for movement dysfunctions in the spine – the most common side effect of abnormal spinal curves. 90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is from the movement of the spine. Scoliosis causes the spine to move abnormally and chiropractic care aids in improving this movement and neurological function. For more information, or to book an appointment, please click below.

Postural Management/Back to School Backpack Blues
School performance and back pain are significantly related – in fact, low back pain was found to be the third most common form of pain interfering with school work and academics. A common cause of postural distortion in kids is the improper use of backpacks. Multiple studies have demonstrated that children that wear their packs improperly, or exceed the weight limit for postural health (exceeding 10% of their body weight) are more likely to develop musculoskeletal pain. Carrying a 12-pound backpack to and from school and lifting it 10 times per day for an entire year puts a cumulative load on a child’s spine of 21,600 pounds – or 6 mid-sized cars worth of pressure! Incorrect postures that begin during the school-age years are more likely to persist as unhealthy lifestyle habits into adulthood. “As the twig is bent, so grows the tree”. Our Pediatric Chiropractors will evaluate your child’s posture and lifestyle habits, including their backpack, to determine an appropriate spinal hygiene program. It is well known that postural hygiene programs are very effective in preventing back pain in both the short and long term. Dental Concerns (TMJ/Braces and Orthodontics)
There is an intimate relationship between posture and dental concerns in both adults and children. For kids, our Pediatric Chiropractors will work with your orthodontist to correct the skeletal distortions that may be causing bite disturbances or crooked teeth and work to improve your child’s postural asymmetries that may have lead to these dental issues in the first place. When chiropractic care and orthodontics are combined, the result is a balanced physical structure during the transition from baby teeth to adult teeth. The most common orthodontic treatment in kids is the use of braces to correct the positioning of the teeth. Throughout their use, our chiropractors aid in reducing the pressure and stress on the face and neck muscles, as well as the spine and nervous system, particularly following any tightenings or re-adjustments of the braces. If your child is having any dental concerns, speak to our Pediatric Chiropractors today to find out how we can be an integral part of restoring your child’s smile and wellbeing. Headaches
Just like adults, children can become affected with headaches  due to knocks or falls, poor diet, a lack of sleep or water and/or stress. Pediatric headaches are more common than you might think – almost half of children have had  a headache by age 7 (about 25% of these are diagnosed before age 5) and about 75% of children have had a headache by age 15. In fact, headaches are one of the top 5 health problems experienced in children. Kids who are too young to verbalize their pain may grab their head, hold their face, hit their head against the wall or floor, and/or show sensitivity to light. Infants may display ineffective latching, grimacing, or positional discomfort, particularly when feeding. Aside from pain and discomfort, childhood headaches can lead to missed school days, poor academic performance and emotional difficulties. A Chiropractic examination of your child may reveal the root cause for the headache and gentle adjusting of the spine can enhance neuromuscular function and help to resolve these headaches – just as it does in adults. Stress

Adults tend to view our children’s worlds as blissful and care free – what do kids have to worry about anyway? The fact is, stress in children is escalating and it is taking its toll on their health and wellbeing, both immediate and for the long term. Stress enters our lives from day one – an infant may experience anxiety from a difficult or prolonged birth, or when their needs are not met by their caregiver (food, love, comfort, etc.). In the early years, separation from parents is the most abundant cause of stress in our kids. Although us adults can rationalize that “we will come back and pick you up at daycare”, the little mind and nervous system of a toddler may go into a full panic mode and this stress can be significant in some children. As our kids grow, academics, peer pressures, increasing divorce rates of parents, puberty, social stresses, expectations for sports performance, loss of loved ones, sibling rivalry, familial relocations and more all create tremendous stresses. As parents, we tend to bring our daily stresses home as well, which further impacts the stress of our children. Kids do not experience stress like adults do, and it may not be very apparent, so we must be be aware of the accumulated stress they are experiencing since it is well know that stress affects the developing brain.  The unhealthy impact of stress on a child’s nervous system is easily detected and corrected with Chiropractic care. It is now well known that Chiropractic alters brain activity in the parts of the brain that process pain and stress reactions, decreases cortisol (stress hormone) levels and improves heart rate variability (stress response vs. relaxation response) balance.
