Toddler Care (Ages 1-4)

Learning to Walk/Bumps and Falls
In the first few years of your child’s life, he or she will transform from a helpless little baby into a mini daredevil explorer. With your child’s increasing desire to learn about the world around them, bumps and falls are going to happen – a lot! These constant and repetitive insults to the spine may not, in themselves, cause major injury, but they can accumulate and lead to repetitive trauma over time. When the bones of the spine move from their normal position, especially during this stage of rapid physical growth and development, permanent alterations can occur that may affect our kids in adulthood. We often say, “As the twig is bent, so grows the tree” – if these small, cumulative traumas are left uncorrected, they can have far-reaching effects that can manifest after our spines have matured. Ear Infections
There are two main factors that lead to chronic ear infections: poor drainage of the ears and weakened communication between the nervous system and the immune system. The top two spinal bones share a lot of nerve supply, muscles and structures with the inner ear and sinuses. When these bones are not moving effectively, we start to see a clogging  up of the physical space in the ears, sinuses and lymphatics. In this case, we also have less movement. It is the movement of the bones and muscles that help drain the fluid from these areas. Wet environments are a breeding ground for infection and the longer that fluid remains in these areas, the better chance there is for viruses and bacteria to grow and invade. On top of that, this region of the upper spine houses the brainstem and spinal cord and protects a very important hard drive and operating system for our immune system. Our nervous system controls and drives our immune system, so when the nerves are not working well, we can’t fight off infections very well either and our immune system will be compromised. Our Pediatric Chiropractors will assess your child for movement of this sensitive area and use non-invasive, specialized technologies to determine the efficiency of their nervous system. Our gentle techniques help encourage movement, drainage and improved immune system function to keep your kids feeling well and full of energy. “Day-Care Care” – Frequent Colds and Flus
We have all experienced the rush of colds, flus, ear infections and other illnesses that barrage our kids and then our households when our kids get back to school or enter daycare. The best way to prepare for this onslaught of infection is to ensure that our immune system, or our internal defence system, is working optimally. Chiropractic adjustments directly impact the nervous system, which is the control center for our immune system. The brain uses nerve cells to communicate directly with the immune system. Recent research has shown that multiple immune factors that act to attack bacteria and viruses as well as improve the immune response are increased in individuals following a chiropractic adjustment. We all try to do everything we can to prevent our kids from getting a cold, but we can’t keep them in a bubble and stop them from coming into contact with infectious bacteria or viruses. Chiropractic is a safe and natural way to increase your family’s ability to fight off colds and flus. For more information, or to book an appointment, please click below.

Meeting Milestones
Compared to most other species, human babies come into this world rather under-developed and have to learn basic survival skills one step at a time. Just like there are guidelines for a normal pregnancy (about 9 months and split into 3 trimesters), there are also guidelines for your baby’s developmental milestones. Please remember that all children are unique and will develop and reach milestones on different time schedules! As a new parent, it is important to know that the outward representations of these milestones (ie. baby lifting his head, grasping your finger, taking his first step) are each just the small tip of the iceberg; underneath the surface, your baby’s neurology is rapidly changing and learning new patterns. When the display of primitive reflexes are not properly integrated neurologically, or when a child is “pushed” to reach a milestone sooner than his or her body is ready for, the brain and the central nervous system suffer, which can lead to developmental and behavioral issues later on. Our Pediatric Chiropractors will assess your child’s neuro-motor development, including all reflexes, to determine if their nervous system is developing in a healthy manner. Our gentle and non-invasive techniques can help your child’s nervous system to function more effectively and encourage healthy infant and child development. Behavioural Concerns (ADD/ADHD/Autism/Learning Difficulties)
The function of our nervous system is to perceive the environment and coordinate the behavior of all other cells. When your child is faced with a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD/ASD/SPD and others on the neurodevelopmental spectrum, it is the behavior that you are looking to change and improve. Since behavior is an output from our body, the common treatment is to control this unwanted output. At their root neurologically, these behaviors are actually input and organizational challenges that then lead to the output you don’t want. There is a common link between all of these conditions – abnormal movement and alignment of the upper spine. 60% of all movement with input into the nervous system occurs in the spine, with ⅓ of that crucial information coming just from the top two spinal bones. The birth process, even when it is normal and healthy, but more so when it is intervened upon and stressful, is often the first insult to these sensitive areas. Since movement determines brain function, when the movement is distorted, so is neurological development. This is where chiropractic comes in. When the spinal bones are out of alignment, or subluxated, the fight/flight side of our nervous system gets stuck on. We cannot be in growth/healing and protection/fight-flight at the same time, so when the stress system is stuck in protection, growth and development are stalled. In the body, when this distortion disturbs the ability of the brain to communicate with the body, a child can no longer perceive their environment and the input gets jumbled. Confusing input = confusing output. Our Pediatric Chiropractors will evaluate your child’s spinal alignment and neuromotor activity to determine if there are any areas that may be leading to a dysfunctional neurosensory input. Our gentle and safe pediatric adjustment techniques work to improve the sensory input, leading to the change in behavioral output you are looking for, without the use of medications.
