Pregnancy Care

Webster Technique
In a pregnant patient, the concept of wellness takes on a whole new meaning. Instead of simply trying to achieve wellness for the expecting mother, we are also working to attain wellness for her unborn child. Because being pregnant comes with its own set of obstacles and changes to your body, it is important for your Prenatal Chiropractor to take a different approach. The Webster technique is a specific protocol to help facilitate the mother’s pelvic alignment and nervous system function. It’s aim is to create optimal room in the pelvis, balance pelvic muscles and ligaments, and reduce torsion to the uterus. This enables the mother a more comfortable pregnancy, and allows the developing baby optimal space for unencumbered growth and proper positioning for delivery. Breech Babies
You just found out your baby is breech. You are most likely concerned about undergoing a c-section as a result. Although not every breech presentation is a recipe for a c-section, most delivering practitioners will recommend scheduling a surgical delivery if the baby remains breech at 37 weeks. A specific chiropractic protocol, the Webster technique, has an 82% success rate for helping babies to turn head down. Most of the time when a baby is presenting breech, it is because the shape or size of the mother’s uterus and/or pelvis is not optimal, usually due to an imbalance of the bones, joints, muscles and ligaments in the area. When given the proper space, the vast majority of babies will present head down, as is optimal for a natural vaginal delivery. Our Prenatal Chiropractors are certified in the Webster technique and work with a number of other healthcare providers to encourage the best possible presentation of your baby, a comfortable and healthy pregnancy, and a safe and natural delivery.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy
There is no better time in a woman’s life to get adjusted than when she is pregnant. Not only will our Prenatal Chiropractors care for you, Mom, but for your developing baby as well. Growing a new human is no easy feat. Our bodies change more during these 9 months than at any other time in our lives. When you become pregnant, the size and structure of your brain begins to change and your body follows suit. The day to day changes that accompany a growing baby can be difficult to ignore, which is where Chiropractic care comes in. The benefits of Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy include:

  • Maintaining a healthier pregnancy
  • Controlling symptoms of nausea
  • Reducing labor and delivery times
  • Relieving back, neck, pelvic or other joint pain
  • Alleviating discomfort associated with the changes in posture and shift in center of gravity
  • Balancing the pelvis, the uterus and all the muscles and ligaments associated with pregnancy

Low Back, Pubic Symphysis and Pelvic Pain
While we are pregnant, our estrogen and relaxin hormones increase. Together, these hormones cause the softening and elongation of our body’s supporting structures, such as our ligaments. When joints are overly soft and loose, it increases the chance for injury and can lead to pain and discomfort. Headaches, upper back pain, lower back pain, pubic symphysis pain, rib discomfort and hip pain are all possible and common symptom patterns with respect to these hormonal changes. In addition to these changes, a pregnant woman’s growing belly causes a forward shift in her centre of gravity. The natural curves of our spine shift to account for the new human on board and, due to this change, the joints of the spine, pelvis, and all the muscles and ligaments associated with these areas will experience increased strain. Add weight gain and the stretching and weakening of abdominal muscles and it’s no wonder that 50 – 80% of women will experience back pain during their pregnancy, with upwards of 35% of those affected still feeling it at 6 months postpartum. As your pregnancy progresses, your pelvic floor will drop and the increasing weight of your baby will start to impact your pelvic structures. In particular, sciatic nerve compression, round ligament tension and pubic symphysis pain all fall into this category and are more common later on in pregnancy. Gentle chiropractic care, with the use of specific prenatal techniques, can help improve the alignment of the spine and pelvis, decrease stress on the body, improve the health and comfort of your pregnancy, and help naturally and safely manage your aches and pains. Managing Stress
Stress is a reality of our modern lifestyle. Add on that you are pregnant and your list of physical, chemical and emotional stresses go through the roof! It is foolish to believe that we can remove the stress from our daily lives, but there are safe and natural ways to help improve the way our bodies react to stress. Stress is important – our fight/flight nervous system response helps to keep us safe and alive. The problem with stress occurs when this fight/flight system is stuck ON for an elongated period of time and we become overstressed. The majority of our population finds themselves in this situation and we are starting to see the impact of chronic stress on the body. Conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, asthma, intestinal problems and many more are all caused by the exposure to a chronic stress response. Chiropractic care can help you to effectively manage your stress response by decreasing both physical and chemical stressors on the body. Gentle and specific adjustments to the spine help to dampen the fight/flight response by activating the opposing rest/repair side of your nervous system. Following an adjustment, the hormone cortisol (or your stress hormone) decreases as well. Our Chiropractors are also trained in neurofeedback and multiple sound therapies that encourage the re-training of an effective and healthy stress response. Not all of these technologies are safe for pregnant women – your Prenatal Chiropractor will determine the best route for you. For more information, or to book an appointment, please click below.
